S60 5th Edition

In addition to the well-known features like the S60 browser and web widgets of the previous S60 3rd Edition, the new S60 5th Edition introduces a host of new features that improve the multimedia and internet experience, offer a reliable, visual touch UI experience, and drive the evolution of developer innovation.

S60 5th Edition includes advanced camcorder features, including widescreen (16:9) video recording capability. Advanced users can adjust image capture with settings such as white balance, color tone and sharpness. Even with the finest settings, errors such as red eye might happen. There is no need to transfer files as the S60 5th Edition includes built-in image and video editors for quick corrections, which make it possible for users to share their images and videos directly from their mobile.

With the widescreen nHD display support in S60 5th Edition, it’s now possible watch videos and images in widescreen mode. The versatile multimedia support includes the common video and audio formats such as MP3, ACC, H.264, Windows Media, Flash Video, and many more. With the built-in internet browser and Flash Lite support, it’s possible to browse the internet as it was intended, and the bigger nHD screen combined with a touch UI enhance the browsing experience even further.

Touch UI, combined with tactile feedback and sensor framework, creates new opportunities for S60 licensees to differentiate and enhance the familiar S60 user experience. The built-in demand paging in S60 5th Edition improves application performance especially for memory-hungry applications and improves memory management to minimize the risks of an out-of-memory situation.

To evolve the developer innovation and opportunities, S60 5th Edition introduces Platform Services for S60. Platform Services enable web widget and Flash developers to access a rich set of features offered by S60 on the Symbian OS platform. With the addition of Open C++, S60 on Symbian OS offers a wide set of powerful developer opportunities for various different developer needs.
